Day 5 Bayeux

The day started off rainy and a little dreary, but we made our way to Bayeux located 20 minutes from our Air B & B.  Bayeux wasn't a city we were originally planning on visiting, but after doing some more research the night before on what we should be seeing in the region, Bayeux was mentioned because of a famous tapestry that depicts the battle of William the Conquer against the Normans. The tapestry is 70 meters long and is impressive.  I am descended from the William the Conquer, so to see this is even more interesting.

The city of Bayeux, while not a large city, is sweet and quaint. We started our visit off by visiting the cathedral.  As we entered the cathedral, they were taping a choral performance for television, so we had to be pretty quiet. We weren't allowed to take any pictures, so unfortunately I don't have any footage. After departing the cathedral we made our way quickly to a local restaurant and by quickly I mean we walked as fast as we could because it was raining and we did not have an umbrella.  It turns out that this meal was probably the best one I had which was sliced chicken breast with a Calvados brown gravy served with fries and a carrot puree.  It was delicious.  On our way to the tapestry, we discovered a bakery where we bought fresh bread and a raspberry tart.  They are my favorite.  They consist of a shortbread cookie covered with a vanilla pastry cream that is more the consistency of a vanilla pudding and then covered with raspberries.  Oh my! Unfortunately, I did not take a picture as it made its way to my mouth instantly.  

While we were walking around town, there was a small little parade with old WWII jeeps.  While we had missed the 80th year celebration of D-Day there were still some scattered events to commemorate the day.
