I don't think you can visit California without going to the beach. My favorites are Newport, with visits to Balboa, Laguna Beach, and Dana Point. We didn't make it down to Dana Point, but had a lovely morning exploring Balboa, walking in and out of the shops. At the pizza place at Crystal Cove because, sadly, the cafe I wanted to go to had closed down, then we ended the day in Laguna and had some ice cream to follow. I would skip the ice cream. It wasn't very good and was really way too expensive. 9$ for a single scoop. Ouch!
