On the Trail of C.S. Lewis

Hi!  I am back in Germany.  I hope you are all doing well.  I just dropped my mother off at the airport and I am ready to tackle the over 500 images I took in Ireland. Ireland is spectacular!  At one point, my son said mom will you just put the camera down and enjoy the trip!  If you are a photographer, you will find it hard not to want to take a photo of everything because there is really so much to see and do! If I am being honest though, I probably wouldn't have taken the children with me as they would have preferred going somewhere they could have worn their swimsuits. Don't get me wrong, Ireland is extremely family friendly.  They kind of just live by the philosophy you gotta let children be children; however, castles and green fields filled with sheep just weren't really my kid's cup of tea.  So are you ready to see Ireland?  Buckle your seat belts and let's go! The writer C.S. Lewis was born in Belfast, Ireland on 22nd of November, 1998 and lived there until he was sent to boarding school in  England at the age of 9 when his mother died of Cancer.  In 2016, the city of Belfast opened a square in tribute to the famous writer. There you will find multiple sculptures from the book Narnia. I will give you a little warning and that is they are not so easy to find.  When we set off to find the square we put the address in the GPS and ended up driving in circles until we abandoned our efforts and went on to our next destination. The next morning I was determined to find the square and once again the same thing happened.  This time a little fish and chip shop was opened and I went in to inquire where the statues were located and to our surprise, it was just a little down the way across from the McDonalds at the corner of Connswater and Combers Greenway.  You will find the statue of C.S. Lewis and the wardrobe in front of the city library walk. Then down the path and you will find the rest of the statues. While not open to the public, if you would like to visit his childhood home just drive down the street to 76 Circular Road Strandtown, Belfast and you find the house named Little Lea.  Stay tuned for more photos of Belfast and the rest of Ireland!

Wonderful photos and I hope we will see more. Ireland has been on my list for quite awhile. It's a very long list and I don't know it will ever happen but seeing pictures like this inspires me to maybe move it up a bit!
What a fun and interesting post. I've loved my vacation in Ireland and I love C.S. Lewis, so this one is just right for me :-)

How amazing, we adored the Narnia books and I was thrilled when I discovered his sci fi. I was just trying to describe The Magicians to my cousin which you can't do without talking about The Chronicles of Narnia.

I'm with you Kelleyn. How people can travel without haveing a camera in their bag or pocket I don't know. Even better with digital and a 1000 pics SD card.
I'm glad you found the statues. Lovely photos!
Wonderful trip -- thanks for sharing it. Those statues are quite something.

That's cool that the city made a tribute to Lewis and his Narnia. I'm glad you were able to find the display and share it with us. Thanks!

Was already missing your presence at All Seasons, and glad it was for something fun like Ireland!!
Happy for you that you found CS Lewis' statue! I knew he was from the UK, but not that he was Irish! How nice to do something with your mom, in the midst of winter in Germany:) Looking forward for some more from Ireland for All Seasons! (Yeah, I know the feeling, you can never shoot too many shots, but for others it's hard to understand)!

It's worth it to be determined! I'm glad you found what you were looking for and, even gladder, that you shared these images with us!! A friend bought me the set of Narnia books when I was thirty-something and I enjoyed them so much!

Glad you are home safe and sound. Yes, sometimes the sights we want to see don't always marry up with interests of the kids ... I am going to be selfish and say that I enjoyed this post and look forward to more of your travelogue!!!

I'd love to visit Ireland. It looks so beautiful! And I totally understand not wanting to put down your camera. At least now you know to take the kids elsewhere on vacation. And you've introduced them to a bit of history and culture, even if they would have rather been playing in the pool…
