Road Trip with Winston

After Winston returned from his mission, we decided to go on a road trip to visit a few of the cities where he served.   On our way to Dresden, we stopped in a city called Geschwenda located in the state of Thuringia.  The town is pretty tiny.  It is where my husband's great-grandfather lived and today some of his cousins still live there; however, on the day we were visiting our relatives were sadly unable to visit with us!   My mother-in-law lived in a nearby town called Rudostadt until right after the war and then after the east was occupied by the Russians they escaped to the west.  While I am not sure that the girls really understood why we stopped there, I hope someday they will appreciate their family history and the sacrifices made by their ancestors. One characteristic of the area is that the homes are covered in shale tiles.

Dearest Kelleyn,
LOVE the architecture and how special those old shale tiles.
You seem to have had picture–perfect weather for your visit.
Yes, one day your children will understand more fully the sacrifice of their ancestors.
History often forces human beings to do things they did not long for... Just for survival!
Hugs,
Mariette
