Be the One

Sitting and watching the evening news leaves one to believe that we are doomed and gives us such a bleak outlook on life.  I rarely watch the news for this reason.  One cannot deny that there is a lot of suffering in the world.  Sometimes it can be overwhelming; however, I am grateful that I belong to a church that believes in the Good News of Jesus Christ and shares a message of hope. I am grateful that my church takes an active role in helping parents to help raise up their children by providing them with messages of love, service, and hope. This weekend my son Winston participated in an annual youth conference where the theme was Be the One, Be the Change, Be the Light. Matthew 5:14-16 14 Ye are the light of the world.  A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.  The youth of our congregation worked with various charities throughout town such as an elderly home, books for Africa, and with our local foster care support program that provides clothing and other supplies to families who take in children. Besides providing service, they listened to talks on the various religious topic and then danced the night away.  I am giving a shoutout to all the adults who participated this weekend making it possible for my son to be apart of the solution instead of apart of the problem.  Thank you for your time, love, and devotion to our children.

A little update:  Just wanted to add that 230 teenagers participated along with 50 adults and they served 22 charities in the Atlanta area.

Sometimes, I have to remind myself that the 'bad' news sells better than 'good' news. It's awesome that your church has such wonderful things for kids to do to help others. Just remember that there is more good in the world than bad--we just don't see it on the news :)
Hi Kelly,
you can be proud to be a member of this community and to get help and give help to each other.
Best, Synnöve

I also avoid watching the news for the same reason. There are good things going on in the world but you would never know it from watching TV.
