Spring Break with Cousins

Growing up so fast!  Her and Winston are only a month apart in age!

E wasn't buying getting his photo taken.  He had more important things to do!

This weekend we drove down to Florida to spend the weekend with family, and while the weather wasn't cooperating the children still had fun.  Teddy and I played together as children and now our children have each other.  I just wish we lived closer.

First Haircut

The day was eventually going to have to come; however, I thought we would be able to go at least one more year without cutting her hair.  She had the most beautiful curls, and I just didn't want to cut them because I new once we did they may not come back.  Every day was met with tears as we brushed her hair for that days style.  It was a beautiful mess closer to mess most of the time and I could not take it any longer.  She couldn't take it!  So off we went to the children's hair salon.  I was actually impressed at how still she sat while getting her haircut.  No tears!  She was happy with the glitter they put in her hair the balloon they gave her!  I bought her this new t-shirt that says Keep Calm and Sparkle.  Isn't she funny here trying to wink at me!  Love this girl# Ready for summer#  Happy there are no more tears#  As you can see, no more curls.  Boo!

Close By "Corner View"

What I should be showing you are pictures of my two little side kicks who don't leave my side all day and want to be touching me just about pretty much all day.  I love them, but it can be a little overwhelming at times. I won't though because I don't want to be one of those moms who can't talk about anything else other than her children.  What I will show you are photos of the landscape close by my house.  I think I live in the most perfect place.  I live close enough to the city that at any moment I have more choices of fun things to do than I possibly have enough time to do and probably could eat at a different restaurant each time we eat out for our lifetime.  We live close enough to the country that pear blossoms bloom everywhere, barns are just around the bend, deer live in our backyard, and when I drive my daughter to school I see these beautiful horses who make driving up the curvy and hilly road worth driving.  Corner View is a weekly appointment shared by people around the globe, an appointment started in the spring of 2009 by Jane in Spain and currently hosted by Francesca over at Fuori Borgo. The Weekend

Hi!  How was your weekend?  Our was good, busy, but good.  Winston had soccer on Saturday.  His team won 3-2 which makes the 4th win of the season.  Amanda (our babysitter) was home for spring break, so she came over on Friday night to babysit.  Frank and I went to the temple.  I always feel so good afterwards and feel like I can accomplish just about anything.  Saturday night Harris and I went to see Divergent.  I am now excited for the second movie to come out.  Sunday, Harris had a leadership meeting for his youth group at church.  He is in the presidency.  I am now in the nursery for the children ages 18 months to 3.  I like that I can be with Addy and Avery.  I made Swedish Meatballs this week.  The majority of the family liked them.. The two that didn't said they didn't like the combination of beef with all spice.  It is kind of an unusual flavor combination; however, I thought they were good.  It is always good to try a new recipe.  Well, I am off to the gym with summer just two months away I can't ignore the fact that I have put on some weight this year and I really need to get it off.  Thankfully, Avery enjoys going to the play center.  Have a great week!

Spring Shenanigans

It's Friday and this week we have been up to a little St. Patrick's shenanigans.  Lucky the Leprechaun came to visit and turned everything green from the cupcakes, the the noodles, and sprite.  He left behind a little pot of gold and a rainbow of skittles.  Spring made it's appearance and we have been taking advantage of the beautiful weather today. Happy Friday!

March

Hi!  I am still here!  I haven't fallen off the planet; however, I have been very busy.  The girls started a music class this week through Kindermusik and Harris is getting his braces off today.  I have been spring cleaning and my sweet husband has been making some additions to our house.  I am so thrilled to have more shelves added to our pantry and soon hooks will be put up for the children's backpacks.  Soccer started and so far Winston's team is 3-0.  I have also been working on converting some of my blog into books and working on our vacation plans for spring break and summer.  The day just seem to fly by.  Last night I watched Frozen with the two girls.  Addy was so cute as she tried to sing the song Let it Go.  It was her first princess movie.  Roman made this diorama for school.  His animal was the Arctic Wolf or white wolf, and this is his habitat.  I think he did a pretty good job.  Well, I better go!  I need to take Addy to school.  Have a great day!

Travel "Corner View"

I wouldn't have a blog named Traveling Bug if I didn't love traveling.  Adding a new addition (Avery) may have changed some of my traveling plans this year, but I am not going to let it stop me from traveling all together. This year, I will have a constant sidekick.  Bonding is such a huge issue when you adopt that you don't want to disrupt that process, and it doesn't happen over night.  You can't just expect someone who hasn't known you for 2 1/4 of their lives to just love you instantaneously.  It occurs little by little with patience, service, and trust.  Avery never had anyone to trust, so leaving her for a day, a couple days, or even a week could really set her back.  It may cause her to think she is being abandoned again.  It won't always be this way as the day will come that she will know we love her and we always come back.

Another way it is changing for at least the next couple of years is that I will probably not venture off without another adult by my side.  Going to the park with the two girls is a challenge. They go off in different directions.  Maybe not the safest thing to go farther than the park.

Where will I be going this year?  Jacksonville, Florida at spring break to visit family, Louisville, Kentucky and Indianapolis, Indiana for a mini reunion with some of the families from our travel group to China.  I can't wait to see the other children and see how much they have bloomed the last couple of months.  Then it is off to Williamsburg, Virginia for a week with the children this summer.  Then the trip I am most excited about Barcelona, Spain which has been one of my bucket list cities and the year will be finished off by a trip to Utah for a week of skiing.  Do you have any fun trips planned this year!  Do tell!

Adventures in China

The other day Frank was going through his pictures on his phone and he found these treasures.  I knew that when we went to China it was going to be an adventure and not just  because we would be adding a new addition to our family.  I wasn't really sure what to expect when we left for China.  I had read tons of blogs and I knew some things in terms of what to expect, but every persons experience is so different.  Years ago my mother and I went to Ireland with family members,  the whole time the family members complained about different things.  No ice, different food, and so on went the complaints the whole trip.  Anyway, I went to China with an open mind.  I was actually pleasantly surprised.  China while in many areas is so very poor it is trying to catch up to the rest of the world.  Every Hotel we stayed in was clean and the service of the  was wonderful.  99% of the food we ate was fantastic!  I didn't have a hard time finding food I liked and I never went to bed hungry.  I am still craving the garlic green beans and garlic chicken wings we had our  last night in Zhengzhou.Still laughing over the meal we had as a group when we walked down the street to eat and came upon a restaurant with no picture menu.  We were so hungry that we thought we would chance it!  What we ended up with after playing charades was pretty funny.  The one thing about China is that if you are looking for an adventure in dining you will find it!  Anything that moves and is alive is free game.  Donkey, camel, rabbit, brains, or tongue are pretty common on menus.  When you go to Walmart you will find things familiar such as Coke, Oreo cookies, chips, Ramen and produce; however, the adventure begins in the meat department.  You will find frog, snakes, chicken feet, and turtles.  It was a good thing I hadn't seen the slaughtered meat sitting on the floor of one shop prior to eating at the beginning of my journey or I may not have eaten any meat the whole trip.  Weeks out and I am ready to go back.  Maybe not for another baby, but I think there is so much more of China to see!  The country is beautiful and the people are very sweet.  Yes, you might have people come and get in your body space, but it isn't meant in mean way.  They are curious and their customs are different about body space.  Our tour guide said to us that it may appear that the people are being rude, but when you grow up with in a country where there are so many people you learn to fight for your space.  It was an adventure!

Another Weekend!

Hello Friday!  So glad you are here!  Tonight I am going to curl up in bed early after putting the girls to bed.  Hubby is away this weekend in Tennessee.  The second weekend in a row-insert a sad face here.  I don't like having him gone.  Thankfully, no one has to be anywhere tonight.  I am going to try and find a babysitter for the girls in the morning, but I am not hopeful.  The one girl I was thinking of has to take her SAT's in the morning.  I don't want to take them to watch Winston's soccer game.  It was so cold last weekend.  Later in the day, we are going to watch a friends son play lacrosse and go out for ice cream afterwards and then later in the evening we are going to a party for a friend's son who achieved his Eagle in Boy Scouts.  Sounds exciting doesn't it!  I bet you wish you were me!  This week we tried a new recipe!  Overall it got two thumbs up!  I loved it!  Don't you get tired eating the same thing over and over.  My husband doesn't as he has eaten the same thing for breakfast for the last 5 years  I had only one child refuse to try it.  You can find the recipe here!  Hope you have a great weekend!

Children's Museum

Last week, the girls and I drove into the city and went to the children's museum.  The girls had so much fun! Avery could have spent all day in playing in the play kitchen.  Addy enjoyed playing in the fish pond, the farmers market, and the sand box.  I am sure we could have spent all day there. We will be going back in a couple of weeks with our friend Morgan.  The girls can't wait!

Renewal "Corner View"

This weeks topic Renewal I feel is mocking me.  When I think of renewal, I think of spring.  Spring is a rebirth a renewal.  Two weeks ago we were hit with a heavy snow storm that is unusual for Atlanta. Last week we had 70 degrees almost every day and now despite the blooming cherry trees the sky is grey, dark, and  very cold.  I am so done with winter!  I am ready for spring!  Sadly, today a good friend of mine underwent her first chemo treatment today for breast cancer.  She is only 37 years old and has 3 small young children. We are praying it isn't to late as the cancer is acting pretty aggressive.  Then today I found out another good friend is dying of cancer. She has lived a good life, but it doesn't make the loss any less sad.  I am in shock as I would have thought she had another good 20 years. She is dearly loved and will be greatly missed.  Then I just found out a guy from my high school class died last night from Organ failure which may be related to his fight with cancer.  How is it that I am now at that stage in life when my peers start dying.  I am too young.  I hate cancer.  I have lost two many loved ones and friends to this disease!  In times like this I can only find comfort in the scriptures and in my Savior Jesus Christ.  He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Revelations 21:4   I know I will see my good friend again.
On a positive note, Avery went to the eye doctor and she is now on a path to make her eyes new.  She will go through patch therapy for a month or longer until her eyes become stronger and her eyes stop drifting.    Then she will need surgery to correct the muscles.   Please pray for my friends and their families as they go through this difficult time in their life.

Random Moments

While maybe not worthy of a blog post individually on their own these photos are moments I don't want to forget.  Oma and Opa came from Germany to hold down the fort while we were in China and took care of us for weeks afterwards.  I am so grateful for their help.  We couldn't have traveled to China without them. While they are here we are blessed with fantastic food, engineering advice, love, and endless Monopoly games.

Winston has as special relationship with Miss Avery!  He traveled to China with us and was there on Gotcha day.  She adores him.  While in China, Winston was often found saying how adorable Chinese babies are and he wants to adopt same day.  Yesterday, my husband testified at church in front of our congregation that he saw the face of God while in China as he saw families open their hearts to amazing children so filled with love.

The Cake was a celebration of my husbands work.  I would tell you what the two stands for, but then I would have to kill you.  It is top Secret.  The cake was an ice cream cake.  It was a huge hit.  Here is where I found the recipe.

Roman was in his first grade play Aesop Fables.  He didn't want to go, but once he got to the school he did a fantastic job.

We have had multiple play dates with our adorable friend Morgan this winter.  We adore her!  We can't wait for her to bring home her baby sister from China.
