It seems like yesterday that I held you in my arms for the first time.  You made me a mother which was something I always wanted to be and now you are 14!  How can that be!  Yesterday you loved playing with cars and trains and today you dream of building things even greater.  Before you know it you will be driving a car, go on your first date, and head of to college and while we will be so proud our heart will ache too because you are no longer our little boy.  We love you so much!  Great things are coming your way!  Happy Birthday Harris!

The Paper Chase and Serendipity "Cornerview"

The day started off high in anticipation. The moment I had waited for 5 months was finally here and soon our paper chase for acquiring our documents for our adoption would be over.   An e-mail notification said my documents were on their way. I ate breakfast with my in-laws and was just about to go upstairs and get dressed to go to the gym when my cell phone chimed. I walked over to the island and picked up my cell phone. On the screen of the phone there was a brief message stating my documents had been delivered. I ran to the door and picked up the Fed Express box. I hadn't actually anticipated my documents arriving so early.   I placed the documents on the counter and remembered that I needed to copy my husbands passport to complete the documents I needed to take to the adoption agency.   The passport wasn't where we store them.  My heart started racing because without his passport I couldn't turn in the documents.  My husband said that maybe I had forgotten to put it back the last time I had used it and maybe the passport was with my other papers. I looked and no luck.  Then my husband suggested that maybe I had left it at Fed Express when I had used it last.  I didn't want to believe it.  I searched the car, my pile of paper work, and just about every drawer in our house.  No luck!  I called the agency and told them that it was possible that I would not be in today and what had happened.  I called Fed Express and they confirmed my worst nightmare.  I had left the passport there and when I didn't return for it they had sent it to the State Department. To make a long story short, the State Department canceled my husbands passport and he will need to apply for a new one.  While I would have liked to have had a good cry it would not have done any good.   Off to the gym!  When we were just about to pull in the gym parking lot the idea came to me that my husband had to use his passport for his birth certificate.  I pulled the car over and called the agency again and told them my idea to use that copy to get the copies I needed.  They said it might work, but were worried it might be too dark.   I whipped the car around and headed to my local copy facility.  Magic!  It worked!  Off it was to the agency.  No way was I going to let all these documents sit in my car all day.  Another hiccup came when we realized I hadn't copied all the documents, but after dropping off my daughter and my mother-in-law off back at the house along with a good hour date with a copy machine I had everything I needed.  While ultimately the day took a turn I hadn't intended through the Grace of God and his sweet tender mercies by giving me the idea to use the copy used in place of my husbands birth certificate it all worked out in the end.  A little serendipitous! At 3:35 p.m. our dossier was completed and turned into our adoption agency.  Yahoo!  What does this mean for us now?  It takes a little less than two week to review, translate, and ship off all our documents to China from which China will in turn give us what is called a Log-in-Date.  That date will allow our agency to match us with a child.  Hopefully, six months from now we will be bringing home our daughter.

The Party

While Roman turned 6 last weekend, the party couldn't start until Oma and Opa arrived from Germany. This year's theme is keep it simple. I would have been thrilled to just run off to Disney for the day or do something at home Roman had his heart set on having a party. He was clear on who he wanted to invite and what the theme was going to be. Roman still loves his superheros, but this year he wanted Angrybird Starwars for his cake, and with a full house Catch Air seemed a perfect place to have the party. The children had a blast. It was a huge sucess. Another simplification was hiring my friend Jaime to make the cake. It was so worth it! Roman had a great party. His friends:Bryson, Tucker, Logan, Logan, Adler, Jacob, and Andrew came. He loves these boys. Happy Birthday Roman! We love you so much!

Yesterday, I had a fantastic visit with my friend Shawn.  Roman, Addy and I took him on a city tour.  We ate at the Varsity and visited Martin Luther King Jr.'s home.  Then just as the children and I dropped him off we ran over to the International airport to pick up Oma and Opa who arrived from Germany.  Then today we were lucky to be blessed with more visitors from Germay.   My husbands good friend Dieter arrived with his wife.  I served bread, salad wth balsamic vinegar dressing, pasta with meatballs and strawberry cake.  Everyone loved the pasta.  I think had I not served bread with the meal a few plates would have been picked up and licked because that is how good this recipe is!  Now it is late and the house is quiet except for the constant  noise of the rain the roof.  I can barely keep my eyes open.  Today was a beautiful Day!

"L" Cornerview

This past weekend was full of life adventures.  We picked up our friend Lasse from the train station who is on his way home to Germany.  The boys loved having him around.  They played a ton of video games, ate burgers at Red Robin, watched a hockey game, cleaned out our basement storage area, and spent many hours living life to it's fullest.  It was a perfect weekend.  Now we are gearing up for our next round of visitors. My old friend Shawn from high school is passing through town, my in-laws arrive an hour after Shawn leaves, and on Thursday my husbands college professor and his wife come to town.  This may be too busy for some, but I love it busy.  I love my life.  I am grateful for all that is good and for the trails I have been given because without the trials the joys would not be so sweet.

My Love Language

Hi!  How are you?  Did you have a great weekend?  Ours was crazy busy.  One little guy in our house turned six and we had an out of town guest come visit, but more on that later.  I wanted to share what I made for Valentines Day!  Yummy!  These are so simple and once you taste them you will never make another batch of cupcakes from a box.  The frosting alone is so devine and I could have simple eaten the frosting all by itself.  I shared these will my neighbor who is going through a rough time.

Chocolate Cupcakes made from Martha Stewarts One Bowl Chocolate Cake Recipe
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened Dutch cocoa powder, plus more for pans
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup low-fat buttermilk
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 3 tablespoons safflower oil
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

  • Bake at 350 degrees until cupcakes are done in the center about 20 minutes. You will want to keep an eye on them. There is nothing worse than an over baked cupcake. They are so dry! Yuck!

    Chocolate Genache Frosting

In a bowl add 8 ounces of your favorite chopped Semi Sweet Chocolate
on top of that add one cup of warm cream.  Stir until the chocolate is smooth.  Allow to sit on counter until the chocolate has cooled and firmed up.  Then place in your mixer and whip up the frosting.  Now frost your cake or cupcakes.  Enjoy!

    Games "Corner view"

How do you like to go up in a swing,
Up in the air so blue?
Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing
          Ever a child can do!

Up in the air and over the wall,
Till I can see so wide,
River and trees and cattle and all
          Over the countryside—

Till I look down on the garden green,
Down on the roof so brown—
Up in the air I go flying again,
Up in the air and down!
    by Robert Louis Stevenson
When I was a child my days were filled with tag, hopscotch, handball, red rover red rover, who stole the bacon, swings, red light green light, digging in the sandbox, going down the slide not once not twice but over and over and over again.  We felt a sense of pride when we learned to cross over to the other side on the monkey bars.  We watched the clock for the school day to end.  Then we would head home to change our clothes, and head back to the play ground.  You couldn't keep us in!  We explored the creeks for tad poles and squished the mud between our toes.  We danced in the rain and made mud pies that were served to kings and queens.  What adventures we had with freckle covered  faces, skinned knees and if  our pants  didn't have a whole in the knee it was by some miracle.  What was your favorite game to play as a child?

    Happy Chinese New Year!

Happy Chinese New Year!  Did you know today is the day Chinese celebrate their New Year!  This year is the year of the Snake.  We have never celebrated Chinese New Year, but this year I thought it would be fun too since we are adopting from China.  The table is set and after church we will come home and eat Potstickers, Sweet and Sour chicken, and Beef Broccoli and for dessert fortune cookies.  I wanted to buy different candies from China, but it turns out my local supermarket doesn't sell any.  How is it that this girl  who grew up in Alaska had them in her grocery store growing up, but that they aren't in our store here in Georgia.  I used to love rice paper candy.  I thought they were the coolest thing.  Next year we will have candy because I will drive to the Asian market and buy some or buy some when we are in China.  Recently, I watched a documentary about this time of year in China.  The film wasn't really on the New Year, but how everyone returns home at this time of year.  Some parents who work in far away cities use this time to go home and see their child who lives with their grandmother and grandfather.  I can't imagine not being able to see my child for a whole year.  It makes me feel extremely blessed.  I don't really believe in Horoscopes, but I thought it is funny that I have two children that are born in the year of the rabbit who are very similar in personality.  In our family we have Harris and Addy who are born in the year of the rabbit.  Winston is born in the year of the horse and my husband are born in the year of the snake.  Roman and I are born in the year of the boar and we have very similar personalities.  I wonder what year Avery will be a rabbit, snake or dragon? Yesterday, Addy and I went and did a little shopping at the American girl store. At first we were just going to buy her baby a valentine outfit, but we couldn't leave without buying Avery her own Itty Bitty Baby too!  There was a woman behind me who questioned why I was buying a Asian baby doll and  explained to her that we were adopting.  Can I just say that I will never again go to the store on a Saturday.  The place was a zoo!  Happy New Year!

Death by Chocolate and A Day to Celebrate

The day did not start off well.
I spent the wee early hours of this morning at the dentist
getting a cavity filled.  I don't like the dentist.
Last week I had two teeth that needed crowns
because I guess I cracked my teeth grinding them.
    Then it started raining.
    Icy cold rain!
    I am done with winter!
    I need SUNSHINE!!!!!
Then like a miracle several things happened.
I had lunch with my 5 year old.
He was the special student of the week at his school.
I discovered the cherry trees are starting to bloom.
I found this recipe for salted fudge chocolate cookies.
These cookies are the best I have tasted
    They are death by chocolate.
One of the two documents the 1-800a came in the mail!
I just need my birth certificate to return from the state department.
Then the papers are off to China!

    Potato with "Corner view"

Potato chips with a tuna fish sandwich is the best, and not just on the side but right on top of my tuna!  It brings me back to my childhood and summer time in Massachusetts.  Hot sticky days and going to the beach.  Now, I bet some of you are saying gross, but you should try it because it is not just for children.  Someone else must like the combination because in 2010 when I went to Rome I went to a fancy restaurant that had a seafood trio appetizer platter and one of the pieces of fish was set on top of a homemade potato chip.  It was heavenly!    Tuna is my second favorite go to sandwich after the BLT.  Have you ever tried tuna with chunks of apples in it or tuna with capers and a little Dijon mustard.  Yum!  Of course I like it with pickles and celery but not together.

Well, it is sunny outside.  I am out of here.  Oh, if you are a praying sort of person I could use your prayers because we are waiting for some documents to come back and they are taking their sweet time.  I am waiting for these papers, so I can send all our paperwork over to China.  We are close to getting matched.  Matched meaning they will show us who our daughter will be!  Thanks for your help!  Have a great day!

A Saturday in February "Snapshot Sunday"

This mommy wasn't feeling well yesterday, so with papa at work we headed to 5 guys for burgers before Harris basketball game.  They make a pretty good burger, but I love their fries.  Addy thinks fries are a vehicle for getting ketchup in her month.  She still isn't eating much.  The donut in her hand she only took a lick of and then handed it to me.  On the other hand her brother Harris is eating me out of house and home.  An hour or two after dinner he is coming to me and asking me when is  it dinner again.  He can't seem to eat enough!  Harris is playing basketball this winter for our church young men's league.  He is having a blast!  Sadly they lost yesterday.  They played against  boys who were a little older and much taller.  They didn't have a chance.  Afterwards we drowned our sorrows at Krispy Kreme donuts.  I love how they make heart shape donuts in the month of February. Later I watched a movie on Netflix called Lifted.  It was really good!  How did you spend your Saturday?  Are you watching the super bowl today?  We aren't because neither of our favorite teams made it so why bother.  Today is my father-in-laws birthday.  Happy Birthday Thijs!!!!!

    Happy February

    Wow!  January flew by!
    It is crazy cold outside.
    How are you keeping warm?
You would not believe it was almost 70 degrees on Tuesday.
Did you know February is Awareness for Heart Disease; especially in Woman.
It is the number one killer of woman.
It is also Congenital Heart Disease Awareness month.
1/100 babies are born with CHD each year.
Well, I am off to see a movie with my love.
